Neuroendocrine specialists are difficult to find. Many endocrinologists specialize in diabetes and maybe thyroid, but only a small few actually specialize in Neuro-Endocrinology (the entire endocrine system). Because it is a subspecialty field, it can be quite challenging to find a physician that fully understands the complete evaluation process when someone is suffering with a neuro-hormonal disorder (a hormonal disorder stemming from a dysfunction of the pituitary gland). It can also be challenging to find a neurosurgeon that specializes in pituitary tumors. Not every neurosurgeon is for every patient, and their degrees of expertise vary greatly. The general rule of thumb is the more of the specific surgery a surgeon does a year, the more competent they are. Many neurosurgeons do a handful of pituitary surgeries per year, but a pituitary neurosurgeon that sees a lot of cases and often sees the most difficult cases, handles anywhere from 75 to over 200 cases a year.
As experienced as a particular surgeon may be, the patient ultimately needs to choose a surgeon they feel comfortable with.
My “Top Doc” picks are Neuro-Endocrine experts that I know personally and I am highly confident in their medical training and level of experience, which is always important when you are considering a full endocrine medical evaluation or surgery.
