Hormones, Hormones, Hormones -- The Best Kept Secret in Medicine

A hormonal disorder can be a difficult diagnosis, and can be often overlooked even by the most thorough medical professionals.

I often refer to a hormonal disorder and/or pituitary disorder as “The Best Kept Secret In Medicine” because after many many years of advocating for education and awareness, I am still amazed at how often I meet people permanently disabled and/or in terrible health simply because they had never heard of a pituitary tumor and/or disorder, nor did any of their doctors ever mention they may have a hormonal disorder caused by a pituitary tumor. Instead they suffered for many years with a laundry list of poor quality of life issues and are treated by our medical community as well as society as lazy overeaters with a mental disorder.

The questions I am asked most often are “Why is it that I’ve have been complaining to my doctors for years about these serious health problems and I have seen numerous medical professionals and none of them have ever tested my pituitary hormones or even suggested I may have a Neuroendocrine disorder? Instead I am treated as if I am crazy and causing my own health problems because I am lazy. Diet and exercise was the only advice my doctors ever gave!” and “Why have I never heard of pituitary disorders and why didn’t my doctors diagnosis me years ago?”

The BTC Pituitary Patient Support Group

Part of Dr. Kelly’s vision for his UCLA Pituitary Tumor and Neuroendocrine Program was to sponsor an educational pituitary patient support group.  Ironically, in April of 2000 at my follow-up appointment with Dr. Kelly after he successfully removed my pituitary tumor, I asked “Can we start a pituitary patient support group?”  And he said “Yes.”

One year later, with the help of Dr. Kelly, Dr. Cohan, Dr. Kelly’s Nurse Practitioner Dioni Krystina (a prolactinoma patient of Dr. Kelly’s), and myself we founded our support group. Our first meeting was held in April 2001, and Dr. Cohan was our guest speaker. We mailed out 200 announcements to most of Dr. Kelly’s patients and we had approximately 19 attendees.  We were  thrilled!

I am proud to say our group has grown to the largest pituitary patient support group nationally and to the best of my knowledge internationally as well. We now send out over 600 announcements and always have a full house.

Dr. Kelly, Krystina and I are very excited for all the great new opportunities the Brain Tumor Center (BTC) will bring for our patient support group!

And we look forward to seeing you there!

It's not that I'm so smart. It's just that I stay with problems longer.
